I always try to pick a figure that I like. It is much easier to do a good job on something when you are interested in it. It also helps if you know the historical background that the figure came from. If I don't know the history I take some time to do RESEARCH. You need to know where your figure came from to paint him correctly. Some things that I look for are: What kinds of materials did they have to make their clothing from? What was the climate like (to determine skin tone)? What nationality are they (to determine hair and eye color)? What types and colors of clothing dyes did they use? Did they decorate their clothing or wear jewelry? You will need to have these answers before you begin.
